about le isole ponziane
Our journey begins as we raise our sails in the direction of Ponza, an island within Lazio’s archipelago, better known as the Pontine Islands. We’ll be sailing from the mainland of the Lazio coast where we’ll explore two of the Pontine Islands, Ponza and Palmarola. Ponza, the largest of the six islands that comprise the Isole Ponziane, was once inhibited by the Etruscans and Romans who built the famed Blue Grottos that dot its jagged coastline. Centuries ago and in the not so distant past, Ponza was used as an island to exile those with politically opposing viewpoints. Both during the reign of Augustus and thousands of years later during the Fascist regime, the island was home to political change makers, poets, and artists.
Legend has it that Ponza is depicted as the island of Aeaea, the island of Greek goddess and sorceress, Circe. Mount Circe, which we will see as we set our sails towards Ponza, was said to be where Circe had her summer home; her winter home being on Aeaea or what we have come to understand through Homer’s descriptions as Isola di Ponza. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus stayed on Ponza for one year before returning to his home in Ithaca; not just because of the witchcraft of Circe, his lover, but in reality for his love of Ponza. If the legend has any truth, I see why Odysseus had a hard time leaving…it’s a special place indeed.
